Too much sitting linked to shortened lives

Too much sitting linked to shortened lives

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Australians who spent a lot of time sitting at a desk or in front of a TV were more likely to die of any cause during a three-year period than those who were only sedentary a few hours a day, according to a new study.Researchers found that the link between too much time sitting and shortened lives stuck when they accounted for how much moderate or vigorous exercise people got as well as their weight and other measures of health. That suggests shifting some time from sitting to light physical activity -- such as slow walking and active chores -- might have important long-term benefits, researchers said."When we give people messages about how much physical activity they should be doing, we also need to talk to them about reducing the amount of hours they spend sitting each day," Hidde van der Ploeg, the new study's lead author from the University of Sydney, told Reuters Health in an email.Of more than 200,000 adults age 45 and older, van der Ploeg and her colleagues found that people who reported sitting for at least 11 hours a day were 40 percent more likely to die during the study than those who sat less than four hours daily. That doesn't prove sitting, itself, cuts people's lives short, she pointed out.Although the researchers also asked participants about a variety of lifestyle habits, there could be other unmeasured differences between people who spend a lot or a little time sitting each day.Still, the findings are consistent with other recent studies suggesting health consequences from too much sitting, said Mark Tremblay, an obesity and activity researcher at Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa."Sitting or reclining, especially in front of screens, is bad for you regardless of your age," said Tremblay, who wasn't involved in the new research.People tend to think they're okay as long as they get their "dose" of working out each day, he told Reuters Health. But, "Getting your 30 minutes of physical activity five times a week is not insurance against chronic disease," Tremblay added.Instead, time spent doing moderate or vigorous exercise and time being totally sedentary may each affect long-term disease risks separately, he said.EFFECTS ON CHOLESTEROL?For the new study, van der Ploeg and her colleagues surveyed about 220,000 people from New South Wales, Australia between 2006 and 2008. The surveys included questions about participants' general health and any medical conditions they had, whether they smoked and how much time they spent both exercising and sitting each day. Then the research team tracked responders using Australian mortality records for an average of almost three years, during which 5,400 -- between two and three percent --died.They found that the extra risk tied to sitting held up regardless of whether people were normal weight or overweight, how much time they spent working out and whether they were healthy or had pre-existing medical conditions, van der Ploeg's team reported this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine. She said too much sitting may affect blood vessels and metabolism by increasing fats in the blood and lowering "good" cholesterol levels."When you are standing or walking your leg muscles are constantly working, which helps to clear blood glucose and blood fats from the blood stream," she said. "If you are sitting this is not happening because the muscles are not active."Even for people who have jobs that involve a lot of desk work, there are ways to train yourself to regularly interrupt sedentary behavior, Tremblay said."Makes sure the fax machine is four steps away from you, not within reaching distance," he advised. "Drink enough water that you have to pee four times a day. Stand up, stretch, walk around a little bit, say hi to your friend in the cubicle next door.""Try standing up while on the phone or have a stand up meeting," van der Ploeg suggested. When it comes to life outside of work, "You don't have to stand or walk for 100 percent of your leisure time of course, as sitting is very comfortable," she said. "But try to find a healthy balance between sitting, standing and walking or other physical activities."

Well, too much sitting is dangerous for our life. If you have much sitting in your activity, try to balance it with standing and walking around. Keep Healthy, guys.. :D

Poem

Well, today I would like to post a poem..

 The Eagle

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ring’d with the azure world, he stands.

The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.

This is one of the famous poem.
According to you, what's kind of poem it is? classic or modern poem?
What's the purpose of the author about this poem?

Practices

Hi guys...
Did you enjoy your saturday night??
I don't think so..
I just spend this night at home..
Hufft

But, it's not my topic today..
I'm going to tell you about my schedule in this brigthen day..

Today, I have two practices. The first is driving practice and the second is dancing practice.

I like my driving practice today because my instructor let me to follow my way to campus. I enjoyed it so much. I think I could drive better than before. On the way, I met someone likes my friend. Then, I tooted him by my car's horn, but he didn't give a response. May be he was not my friend. That's Ok.. Hahaha

After taking driving class, I went to campus to follow dancing practice with my group. Actually, we couldn't practice well because two members of my group didn't come. So, it's hard for us to make a movement. Finally, we just danced and danced without make movements.

I finished my dancing practice around 4 p.m. After that, we bought meatball and enjoyed it togehter in Lia's rent room. That's very delicious. Then, I got home with cika and arrived home at 6.55 p.m.
I felt tired, but fun. I enjoyed my activities today.

Hope tomorrow will be better.. :D

A whole new world...

Have you ever heard this song??

Lirik Lagu Aladdin – A Whole New World

I can show you the world
Shining, shimmering, splendid
Tell me, princess, now when did
You last let your heart decide?
I can open your eyes
Take you wonder by wonder
Over, sideways and under
On a magic carpet ride
A whole new world
A new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us no or where to go
Or say we’re only dreaming
A whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when I’m way up here
It’s crystal clear
That now I’m in a whole
New world with you
Now I’m in a whole
New world with you
Unbelievable sights
Indescribable feeling
Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling
Through an endless diamond sky
A whole new world
Don’t you dare close your eyes
A hundred thousand things to see
Hold your breath, it gets better
I’m like a shooting star
I’ve come so far
I can’t go back
To where I used to be
A whole new world
Every turn a surprise
With new horizons to pursue
Every moment red-letter
I’ll chase them anywhere
There’s time to spare
Let me share this whole
New world with you
A whole new world
That’s where we’ll be
A thrilling chase
A wondrous place
For you and me

In my opinion, this song is really good. I also want to have a new world with a right person and  without others importants' opinion.. hahahaa :D

So Bad

I don't know what happened to me today..

In the morning, I felt so bad. Actually, I want to get day off today, but my mom didn't alow me.
Arrived in campus, I called the member of my group and asked about our project. She said she has done it,

but she's still at home at that time. OMG, what should I do to make her here?
So, I decided not to come to the class and just stayed outside. But my friend, Winda and Dedi as known as Dadedong odong2 came to me and tell a joke. They could entertained me and force me to follow the class. And I got it.

In the afternoon, we had mid term test in structure 3 subject. I got stuck when I answered the question. Badly, every person that I asked about the answer, always caught by Ms. Pipim. So, I started not to ask everyone. And at the end of the time, Ms. Pipim called my name because I gave an answer to my friend. Oh God, I never feel stuck like this before. Everything seems going to be bad.

I hope tomorrow will be better...

Have a long weekend guys..
Don't forget to do our assignment..
Miss you..
:D

An Amateur Detective

Hi guys...
How are you today?
Fine..??
Good..

Today, I'll post about my experience in making Introlit assignment...

We got the assignment about the Lamb to the Slaughter. We have to answer some questions about the story and the questions are not easy I think.

For the first, I'm absolutely sure about my answers because it's from my brain and I believe it for sure.
But, when I asked my friend, I'm confused. (I don't want to mention his name because I don't want to pay royalty then).
We had some different opinion each other.

So, we decided to resolve this case together even though we are in the different group.
I think tonight I'm an amateur detective. Hahahaa

Finally, we got the answer, even though we're not sure about that...
We can conclude that those questions and the answers just like "a lucky guess".

That's all,.

Night All...

10 Ways to Save Gas (and Money)!

The cost of gas continues to rise and from the looks of things, it's not slowing down anytime soon. To help get the most bang for your transportation buck, we've collected 10 tips to help you save gasand money.

1. Brake correctly
Cars use the most gas when they accelerate. While this may seem obvious, in somewhat heavy traffic this can mean burning through a lot of gas. It's fairly easy to maintain a speed in a long line of cars without using your brakes-instead, pay attention to the cars in front you and anticipate when to slightly ease of the gas. This will keep you from losing momentum when you hit the brakes. In heavy traffic, this will result in 10-20% better gas mileage.

2. Use cruise control
If your car is equipped with cruise control and there isn't much traffic, you'll save gas if you turn it on. It keeps your speed constant, which means you won't have to keep accelerating and use more gas.

3. Shift to neutral when still
When idling at a stoplight or in a parking light, shift into neutral. This reduces transmission strain and gives the transmission some time to cool down.

4. Drop extra weight
The heavier the car, the more gas it takes to move it. Remove heavy items that've been collecting dust in your trunk-it's a simple thing that will instantly save you money. Bonus tip: Don't fill up until you're on empty since gas is heavy too.

5. Pick the best route
If your commute involves lots of stoplights, it might not be the most fuel-efficient route. Stopping a lot only increases the amount of gas you use. Look for low-traffic highways or back roads.

6. Turn off the AC
As you probably know, running the air conditioner impacts your car's overall fuel efficiency. So if you can bear it, try not to turn it on. If you must, turn it off 5-10 minutes before reaching your destination. The car will stay cool enough for that short amount of time. Bonus tip: always park in the shade-that way, your car won't have to work as hard to get cool.

7. Remove your ski rack
Unless you're using the ski, bicycle, or luggage rack on the roof every week, remove it. It increases the wind resistance on your car which results in more gas used.

8. Carpool
The amount of gas used per person is halved each time you carpool to work with a co-worker. Not only are you saving gas and money, you get the added bonus of cruising in the carpool lane!

9. Check your air filter
At any given time, almost 25% of cars need to replace their air filter. Doing so can improve gas mileage by 10%!

10. Drive slower
It's true: you use less gas when you drive slower. In fact, for every five miles per hour you reduce highway speed, you reduce fuel consumption by 7%.

Hope you'll get the point, guys.. :D

Runner Up

Hi guys..
How are you today?
I hope good.

Well, I have a little story about my dancing class...

Today, we have the second competition, it was about basic 2a and 2b.
I'm so nervous because I've failed last week and I don't want to fail again..
But, you know the fact??
In fact, my group as the smallest group became the RUNNER UP..
Thanks God, we could finish it well...

How come?
What's the sroty behind that?
Yesterday, we practiced dance started at 4 pm until and some of my friends finished at 6.30 pm.
But, I couldn't do the same because me and my teammate, Mila Multin failed, so we must practice a lot.
We finished practice around 9 pm and I got home around 10 pm. I'm so tired. Arrived home, I took a bath and  sleep aaaand oh no! I forgot to post my story yesterday.. Huuuft

Over All, Today is a Good Day,,
Wish tomorrow is better... :D

The Ant and the Grasshopper

The Grasshopper and the Ants

In a field one summer's day a grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content.  A group of ants walked by, grunting as they struggled to carry plump kernels of corn.
"Where are you going with those heavy things?" asked the grasshopper.
Without stopping, the first ant replied, "To our ant hill.  This is the third kernel I've delivered today."
"Why not come and sing with me," teased the grasshopper, "instead of working so hard?"
"We are helping to store food for the winter," said the ant, "and think you should do the same."
"Winter is far away and it is a glorious day to play," sang the grasshopper.
But the ants went on their way and continued their hard work.
The weather soon turned cold.  All the food lying in the field was covered with a thick white blanket of snow that even the grasshopper could not dig through.  Soon the grasshopper found itself dying of hunger.
He staggered to the ants' hill and saw them handing out corn from the stores they had collected in the summer.  He begged them for something to eat.
"What!" cried the ants in surprise, "haven't you stored anything away for the winter?  What in the world were you doing all last summer?"
"I didn't have time to store any food," complained the grasshopper; "I was so busy playing music that before I knew it the summer was gone."
The ants shook their heads in disgust, turned their backs on the grasshopper and went on with their work.

Just For Women :)

Women’s Status Worldwide: Best and Worst Places

Celebrate Women's History Month
In honor of the 101 st International Women's Dayon Thursday, March 8, The Independentanalyzed women's status around the world based on 20 criteria. Some of the results are brutal: in South Sudan, the worst place to give birth, there are fewer than 20 midwives to serve the entire country. Other statistics offer hope for women as they advance in the 21st Century. Women's literacy in Lesotho outpaces men's and women have served as head of state in Sri Lanka for 23 years.

At the 2011 session of the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations, Michelle Bachelet, the head of UN Women, pointed out in her closing remarks: "Education and equal access and participation in science and technology for women of all ages are not only imperative for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women -- they are also an economic necessity, providing women with the knowledge and understanding necessary for lifelong learning, employment, better physical and mental health, as well as full participation in social, economic and political development." More than that, the status of women and girls is, at its heart, a moral issue that mirrors the progress of human rights within society in general.
Below are 20 key findings.

1. Best place to be a woman: Iceland
Iceland has the greatest equality between men and women, taking into account politics, education, employment and health indicators. The UK comes in at 16th place, down one since 2010. The worst is Yemen, and the most dangerous is Afghanistan.
2. Best place to be a politician: Rwanda
Rwanda is the only nation in which females make up the majority of parliamentarians. Women hold 45 out of 80 seats. The UK comes in at 45th place, behind Pakistan and United Arab Emirates. The worst countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Qatar, Oman and Belize, have no women in parliament.
3. Best place to be a mother: Norway
Norway is the world's best place to be a mother, with low risks of maternal mortality – one in 7,600 – and skilled help at nearly all births. The UK is ranked 13th. The worst is Afghanistan, where a woman is at least 200 times more likely to die during childbirth than from bombs or bullets.
4. Best place to read and write: Lesotho
Literacy rates among women in Lesotho exceed those of men, with 95 per cent of women able to read and write, compared with 83 per cent of men. The UK is ranked 21st. The worst country is Ethiopia, where only 18 per cent of women can read and write, compared with 42 per cent of men.
5. Best place to be head of state: Sri Lanka
Women have run Sri Lanka for 23 years. The UK comes in at seventh place, while dozens of countries, including Spain and Sweden, have never had a female head of government.
6. Best place to be a woman in the arts: Sweden
The Swedish Arts Council has launched initiatives to improve gender equality in the arts. The Swedish Film Institute mandates that film grants be distributed evenly between men and women and there are quotas for women in film production. In the UK, only 6 per cent of film directors and 12 per cent of screenwriters are women.
7. Best place to be a top dog: Thailand
Thailand has the greatest percentage of women in senior management (45 per cent). The UK did not rank in the top 20 countries, with 23 per cent of senior management made up of women. The lowest is Japan, where 8 per cent of senior management positions are held by women.
8. Best place to give birth: Greece
Greece is the world's safest place to give birth, with a one in 31,800 risk of dying in childbirth. The UK is in 13th position, but the worst place to have a baby is thought to be the world's newest country, South Sudan. There are fewer than 20 midwives in the whole country.
9. Best place for economic participation: Bahamas
The Bahamas holds the top spot globally for economic participation and opportunity for women. The UK ranks 33rd. The Bahamas has closed its gender gap by 91 per cent in the past six years, while the lowest-ranking country, Yemen, has closed only 32 per cent of its economic gender gap in the same period.
10. Best place to be a journalist: Caribbean
The Caribbean is the region with the highest proportion of TV, print and radio news stories reported by women (45 per cent). The worst region is Africa, with 30 per cent of stories reported by women. Europe comes in at 35 per cent. In the UK, about 9 per cent of national newspaper editors are women.
11. Best place for the right to choose: Sweden
Sweden permits women to have abortions without restrictions for the first 18 weeks of pregnancy and there are no mandatory consent requirements. El Salvador, the Philippines and Nicaragua are among the worst because of a ban on all abortions. British women can have an abortion up to 24 weeks; two doctors have to give consent.
12. Best place for labour force participation: Burundi
Burundi in sub-Saharan Africa ranks first for labour force participation and is the only country where the female labour force participation rate (92 per cent) is higher than that of men (88 per cent). The UK is ranked 47th. The worst country is Pakistan, where the labour force is made up of four times as many men as women.
13. Best place to earn money: Luxembourg
Luxembourg shares the top spot (with Norway) for estimated earned income. When income is capped at $40,000, women and men are as likely to earn the same amount. The UK is ranked 23rd, while the lowest female earners are in Saudi Arabia, where women earn $7,157 to men's $36,727.
14. Best place to go to university: Qatar
In Qatar six women are enrolled in tertiary education for every man. Questions remain as to whether their investment in education has led to the integration of women into the economy. The UK is ranked 38th. The worst country is Chad, where three times as many men are enrolled as women.
15. Best place to live long: Japan
Women in Japan can expect to live longest (87), beating men by seven years. Female life expectancy is shortest in Lesotho (48), but only two years less than men. Life expectancy in the UK has reached its highest recorded level for men (78) and women (82). It has the smallest gender gap, four years, of any country in the EU.
16. Best place to be a lady of leisure: Denmark
Women in Denmark have more time for leisure, spending only 57 more minutes each day on unpaid work than men, the lowest in the OECD. British women spend two hours more per day doing unpaid work than men. Mexican women have it hardest, spending four hours 21 minutes more on unpaid work than men.
17. Best place to be an athlete: US
Five of the top 10 highest-paid female sporting athletes in 2011 were from the US. The worst country, Saudi Arabia, has never sent a female athlete to the Olympics and bans girls from sports in state schools. Sponsorship of British women's sport came to 0.5 per cent of the market between January 2010 and August 2011.
18. Best place to leave your husband: Guam
The Micronesian island of Guam has the highest divorce rate in the world, and Guatemala has the lowest. The number of divorces in England and Wales in 2010 increased by 4.9 per cent since 2009.
19. Best place to drive a car: India
New Delhi is the best place for women wanting to break into the male-dominated world of taxi drivers. An NGO in the country's capital launched an initiative to train women in the first radio-taxi service run only by women. The worst country is Saudi Arabia, the only country in the world to ban women from driving.
20. Best place for high-skilled jobs: Jamaica
Jamaica has the highest ratio of women in high-skilled jobs, such as legislators, senior officials and managers. Almost 60 per cent of these roles are filled by women. The UK is ranked 35th in the global survey, with Yemen coming last. Women there take up only 2 per cent of high-skilled jobs.

ARE YOU INTERESTED ON IT, LADIES??
CHOOSE YOUR PLACE AND BE THE BEST WOMEN... :D
